Formatting and shortcuts
Format text with the toolbar that appears over a selection, and with keyboard shortcuts.
The toolbar
Select some text and a toolbar appears above it: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, alignment (left, centre, right), link, text colour, background colour, Copy format (서식 복사) and Comment (댓글). Changing the kind of block (paragraph ↔ heading ↔ list) is done here too.

Number keys change the kind of block too: Ctrl+Shift+number on Windows, Cmd+Option+number on a Mac. 0 paragraph, 1 · 2 · 3 headings, 4 checklist, 5 bulleted list, 6 numbered list, 7 toggle list, 8 code, 9 page. They are also shown beside each kind under Turn into (전환) in the handle menu and in the / menu. A code block turns into other kinds too, its lines kept as line breaks. Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+C in a code block turns it back into a paragraph, and in another block makes it a code block.
The commands of the page menu (⋯) have keys too, shown beside each command in the menu.
| Page menu | Press |
|---|---|
| Copy link (링크 복사) | Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+L |
| Add sub-page (하위 페이지 추가) | Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+N |
| Duplicate (복제); on a database page, Duplicate with rows (행까지 복제) | Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+D |
| Move to (다른 위치로 이동) | Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+M |
| Share (공유) | Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+S |
| Version history (버전 기록) | Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+H |
| Export (내보내기) | Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+E |
| Move to trash (휴지통으로 이동) | Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+Backspace |
On a Mac, use Cmd for Ctrl and Option for Alt.
The page menu is grouped in Notion's order. At the top you pick the font (default, serif, monospace) straight away; below come Copy link (링크 복사), Duplicate (복제) (on a database page, Duplicate with rows and Duplicate structure only), Move to (다른 위치로 이동) and Move to trash (휴지통으로 이동); the Small text (작은 글자), Full width (전체 너비) and Lock page (페이지 잠금) switches; Find and replace (찾기 및 바꾸기), Version history (버전 기록) and Analytics; Export (내보내기); and Notify me (알림 받기), for all comments or only replies and mentions. What Notion does not have there, Add sub-page (하위 페이지 추가), Move up · Move down (위로 이동 · 아래로 이동) to reorder within the same parent page, Share (공유), Publish as site and Share to Google Chat, is grouped below them, and Refresh (새로고침) to load the page again comes last. The foot of the menu shows how many words and characters the page holds, who last changed it and when, and who created it and when.
Lock page stops the body, title, icon and values from being changed. It guards against slips, not people: anyone who can edit the page unlocks it at any time with Locked (잠김) beside the save status at the top, or with the switch in the menu. Comments can still be added to a locked page.
To the left of ⋯ at the top of a page are the save status, favourite (star), Follow page (페이지 팔로우) (bell), comments and Page appearance buttons.
Alignment
Paragraphs, headings and list items are aligned left, centre or right, block by block. Select some text and press an alignment button in the toolbar, or pick from Align (정렬) in the block handle (⋮⋮) menu. In a table, select cells and use the toolbar to align just those cells; picking from the table's handle menu aligns every cell.
Colour
Text colour and background colour are picked from the toolbar. Once a colour has been picked, a button with that colour appears beside the colours, so the same colour takes one press from then on (as Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+H does). The button stays until the page is reloaded. The colour of a whole block is set from the block handle menu. Colours are adjusted automatically so they stay readable in dark mode.
Copy format
Copy format moves how some text looks (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, inline code, text colour, background colour) to other text, as it is.
- Toolbar: select the text whose look you want, press Copy format (서식 복사) (the brush), then drag over the text to paint. One paint ends it. Press the button twice (on a phone, tap it twice quickly) to keep painting in several places; Esc or another press ends it. While painting, the pointer is a brush, and the toolbar's Apply here (여기에 적용) paints the text selected now (on a phone, or with a selection made with the keys).
- Shortcuts: Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+Shift+C copies the selected text's look; select the text to paint and press Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+Shift+V. With no text selected, what you type next takes that look. Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+C stays the code block shortcut. On a keyboard where these keys type another character (AltGr on some European layouts), use the toolbar button or the block menu instead.
- Block menu: Copy format (서식 복사) and Paste format (서식 붙여넣기) in Ctrl/Cmd+/ or the block handle (⋮⋮) menu do the same. Their target is the text selected before Ctrl/Cmd+/ was pressed, or the selected blocks whole when no text was selected.
Painted text loses its own look and takes the copied one. Links, mentions and comments stay. Inline code is not put on a part with a link or a comment, since code would remove the link. One paint is undone with one undo (Ctrl/Cmd+Z). The copied look lasts until the page is reloaded, so it can be pasted into another page or a comment.
Find and replace
Press Ctrl/Cmd+F in the page, or Find and replace (찾기 및 바꾸기) in the page menu (⋯), and a find bar opens at the top right of the body. Opened with text selected, it looks for that text first. The matches are marked in the body, and the bar says which one is in view (2/5, say). Enter goes to the next match and Shift+Enter to the one before. A match inside a closed toggle opens the toggle. Match case (대/소문자 구분) tells upper and lower case apart. Esc closes the bar and leaves the match last in view selected.
The chevron at the left of the bar opens the Replace with (바꿀 내용) field. On Windows and Linux, Ctrl+H opens the bar with that field open. On a Mac, Cmd+H hides the browser, so open the bar with Cmd+F and press the chevron. Replace (바꾸기) replaces the match in view and goes to the next one; Replace all (모두 바꾸기) replaces every match at once. One undo (Ctrl/Cmd+Z) takes back a Replace all too. The new text takes the formatting (bold, colour and so on) of the first letter of the text it replaces.
- The find bar looks in the body only. It does not look in the page title, in the rows of a database view block, or in the text of another page that a synced block shows.
- A match stays within one block. Text on either side of a mention is not read as one piece of text.
- On a page you can only view, or a locked page, the bar finds but does not replace.
- With the focus outside the page, in the sidebar say, Ctrl/Cmd+F opens the browser's own find.
