Google Drive integration

Link Drive files into a page, import Google Docs and Sheets as pages, and export pages to your own Drive.

What you can do

To do thisDo this
Put a Drive file in a pagePaste the Drive address on an empty line, or use /Google Drive
Turn Google Docs and Sheets into pagesSpace settings (Space 설정) → Import and export (가져오기·내보내기) → Import content (자료 가져오기) → Choose from Google Drive (Google Drive에서 고르기)
Keep a Drive file as a page attachmentSave as attachment (첨부로 저장) on the link block
Save a page to your Drivepage menu (⋯) → Export (내보내기) → Destination (받는 곳): Google Drive

Import makes a copy in ESTnote. Export makes a copy in Drive. The two copies do not follow each other afterwards. Editing one leaves the other as it was.

Which files ESTnote can reach

ESTnote cannot see your whole Drive. It reaches two kinds of file only.

  • Files you chose yourself in the file chooser
  • Files ESTnote made by exporting

This is the Google Drive permission you allowed when you signed in. There is nothing new to consent to.

Linking a Drive file into a page

  1. Paste a Drive or Google Docs address on an empty line. The address becomes a file block.
  2. Or type / on an empty line, choose Google Drive, then press Pick from Drive (Drive에서 고르기) or enter an address. On the left of the chooser, pick Google Drive (My Drive), Shared drives or Shared with me, and open folders by clicking them.
  3. Press Preview (미리보기) to open the file inside the block. Drag the bar under it to change the height.

An address pasted into a line that already has text becomes a link in that text, not a block.

Choosing several files at once makes one block per file. You can link Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, folders, and stored files such as PDFs. Google Forms open as a link only.

Save as attachment

Save as attachment (첨부로 저장) on a link block copies the file into the page's attachments. An attachment belongs to the page, so anyone who can see the page can open it without any Drive permission.

  • Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drawings are saved as a PDF.
  • Other files are saved as they are.
  • One attachment can be up to 10 MiB.

Importing from Drive

  1. Open Space name → Space settings (Space 설정) → Import and export (가져오기·내보내기) → Import (자료 가져오기) at the top of the sidebar.
  2. Press Pick from Google Drive (Google Drive에서 고르기) and choose the files. You can choose up to 20 at a time.
  3. Check the plan, which shows what will be made, and press Run import (가져오기 실행).
  4. If you do not like the result, Undo (되돌리기) sends the imported pages to the trash in one step.
Drive fileWhat it becomes in ESTnote
Google DocsA page. The body arrives as blocks
Google SheetsA database. The first sheet only, with its first row as the column names
.md and .html filesA page
.csv filesA database
.zip filesRead as a Notion, Confluence or ESTnote export

Google Slides, images and PDFs cannot become pages. Put them in as a link block, or save them as attachments.

Imported pages appear under Private documents (개인 문서). Google Drive originals (Google Drive 원본) on the import screen opens the original files again.

Exporting to Drive

  1. Open ⋯ → Export (내보내기) to the right of the page title.
  2. Choose Google Drive as the Destination (받는 곳).
  3. Choose a format and a range, then press Export to Drive (Drive로 내보내기).
  4. When it is done, the window closes and a notice at the bottom offers Open in Drive (Drive에서 열기). The file is in the ESTnote folder of your Drive.
FormatWhat appears in Drive
Google Docs documentA document you can edit in Drive right away
MarkdownAn .md file, or a .zip when there are attachments or child pages
HTMLOne document with its attachments inside
Structure-preserving formatA .zip that can be imported again

With child pages included, Google Docs and HTML become one document with a section per page. Blocks that Docs does not have, such as database views and buttons, are left as a name only.

Updating a file you exported before

If you have exported with the same format and range before, How to save (저장 방식) offers Update (갱신). It replaces the content of that Drive file instead of making a new one.

If someone edited the file in Drive after the last export, the update stops and asks.

  • Overwrite the Drive file (Drive 파일 덮어쓰기): what was changed in Drive is lost.
  • Export as a new copy (새 사본으로 내보내기): the existing file stays and a new one is made.

You can also export a new copy when the file was deleted or put in the trash in Drive.

The server carries an export through. If Drive does not answer for a while it tries again by itself, and the progress is still there when you close and reopen the screen.

Checking the connection and connecting again

gear (톱니바퀴) → Connected services (연결된 서비스) → Google Drive at the bottom of the sidebar shows the connection.

  • Connected (연결되어 있습니다): ready to use.
  • Connect again (다시 연결): the permission was withdrawn in your Google account, or the connection expired. Press it and allow access again with the same Google account you signed in with.

You can withdraw the permission on Google's side in your Google account's permissions.

Common problems

It says the file was chosen with a different Google account.

The file chooser opened under a Google account other than the one signed in to ESTnote. This happens when the browser is signed in to several Google accounts. Choose again, and pick the account you use for ESTnote on the account screen.

The file chooser does not open.

The browser may have blocked the popup. Press the blocked-popup mark in the address bar and allow popups for this site. An ad-blocking extension can also block Google's screen.

There is no "Pick from Drive" button.

The server has no settings for Google's file chooser. You can still link a file by pasting its Drive address. Importing needs the file chooser, so ask an admin to set it up.

The preview says I need access.

The Google account signed in to this browser may not view that file. Ask the file's owner to share it in Drive. Being able to see the ESTnote page is a separate matter.

Does it work in the mobile apps?

A linked file shows as a card and opens in Drive when pressed. Use the web for choosing files, importing and exporting.
