Blocks and the slash menu
A page body is made of blocks. Type / on an empty line to pick a block, and move blocks by their handle.
Adding a block
- Type / on an empty line and the block list opens. Keep typing a name to narrow it down, for example
/표(table) or/코드(code). - Enter makes the next block; Backspace on an empty block removes it.
- Drag the handle (⋮⋮) on the left of a block to reorder; click it for the block menu. It is grouped as Comment (댓글), Turn into (전환) and Colour (색깔); what that kind of block has of its own (settings, Align (정렬) and so on); Copy block link (블록 링크 복사), Duplicate (복제), Cut (잘라내기), Copy (복사), Indent (들여쓰기) and Outdent (내어쓰기); and Delete (삭제). Indent puts the block under the block above it and Outdent takes it one level out. Blocks without text, such as a table or a picture, are indented this way too; when it cannot be done, as for the first block or a block right in a column, the entry is greyed out. To take a block out of a column, drag it by its handle. In a table, Tab goes to the next cell, so from the keyboard choose the whole table with Esc, then press Tab or Shift+Tab. Type in the search field at the top to find any entry, those inside the submenus too; the bottom lines show how many words and characters the blocks hold, and who last edited the block and when. A block you cut or copied is placed from another block's handle menu with Paste below (아래에 붙여넣기), on another page too. Pictures and files copied from another page and pasted with Ctrl+V are copied into this page as its own attachments; if you cannot open the page they came from, they are left out and a notice says so.
- Drag a block by its handle and let go at the left or right end of another block, and the two stand side by side in columns. While you drag, a line runs down the side of that block; let go between blocks and they only change order, as before. Let go beside a block in a column and a new column opens there; dragging makes a layout hold up to four columns. Drag the last block out of a column and the column goes, as Delete column (열 삭제) takes it, while the other columns stay. On a narrow screen, where columns stack, dragging makes no columns.
- Turn into changes a block into another kind (paragraph, heading, checklist, list, toggle, code, quote, callout, equation and more), keeping its text and the blocks under it. Page (페이지) makes the block a sub-page: its text becomes the page title, the blocks indented under it and their attachments move to the new page, and a link to the page takes the block's place. An equation or a Mermaid block turns into text with its source as the text, and does not turn into a page. On a touch screen, use Turn into in the bar at the bottom.
- Press Esc to select blocks whole. The block the caret was in is selected; ↑ · ↓ move to another block and Shift+↑ · ↓ stretch the selection. Backspace deletes the selected blocks and Ctrl/Cmd+D duplicates them; Enter or typing goes back to editing. Esc again lets go. With several blocks selected, the handle menu's commands act on all of them.
- With the mouse, drag from the empty margin beside the text to draw a box. Every block the box touches is selected whole, and dragging to the top or bottom edge of the window scrolls the page along. A click on the empty margin lets go. Drag the handle of any selected block and the selected blocks move together as one, and stay selected where they land.
- Ctrl/Cmd+/ opens the block menu from the keyboard, for the selected blocks or the block the caret is in. Type to narrow it and press Enter.
- An image's handle menu has Replace (바꾸기), Caption (캡션), Crop (자르기), Alt text (대체 텍스트) (the description a screen reader reads out), Add link (링크 추가), Download (다운로드) and Open original (원본 열기). Video, audio and file blocks have Replace, Caption and Rename (이름 바꾸기) in the same menu. A code block's Wrap code (코드 줄 바꿈) breaks long lines at the block's width instead of letting them run off the side, and its Caption shows under the code.
- Turn into offers text, headings 1 to 6, lists, code, quote, callout, equation and toggle headings. Link, PDF, map, GitHub and Drive blocks and database view blocks open their address or database with Open original (원본 열기) in the handle menu.
- Copy block link copies an address that goes straight to that block. To move a block to another page, Cut it and choose Paste below from a block's handle menu on that page. Cut while several blocks are selected, they move together.
- A block's own settings open from the handle menu too: a callout's icon (Callout settings), a link's address and display (Link settings), a button's actions (Button settings), how a database view block shows its database (Database view settings) and an embed's address (Change URL). On a touch screen, tap the block, then Settings in the bar at the bottom.
- Tab indents a list item one level, Shift+Tab outdents it.
- Enter in an empty indented line: under an ordinary paragraph it makes another empty line at the same depth; an empty list, checklist or toggle item first becomes a plain line in its place, and the next Enter steps it out one level; an empty line inside a toggle or a callout steps out one level too. Shift+Enter breaks the line without making a new block.
- To step an indented line out, press Shift+Tab, or, in a line with text, Backspace at the start of the line. Backspace steps out that line only, one level. The lines under it cannot sit two levels below it, so they come out one level with it; the lines after it at its old depth stay where they are and go under the line stepped out.
- Backspace in an empty line takes that line only. The lines under it keep their depth and go under the line before it at the same depth; when there is none, they come out one level, into the place of the line taken. An empty list or checklist item first becomes a plain line, and the next Backspace takes it.
- To move several lines together with the lines under them, select them and press Tab or Shift+Tab, or use Indent and Outdent in the handle menu.

A few blocks in more detail
- Table of contents (목차): gathers the page's heading blocks automatically. Clicking an entry changes the address to that spot, so you can copy the address to share one section.
- Callout (콜아웃): an emphasised box with an emoji and a background. Press the icon to pick another emoji, or upload a picture on the Upload (업로드) tab to use as the icon. Shift+Enter breaks the line; Enter at the end of its text opens a block inside the callout, so to-do and bulleted lists can go in it. Enter on an empty block inside leaves the callout. Its background and text colours come from Colors in the handle menu, the same colours as Notion's; the background fills the box and the blocks inside it. Drag another block by its handle onto the lower part of the callout's text and it becomes the first block inside the callout (onto the upper part, it goes above the callout); drop it between the blocks inside and it lands there. Select several blocks and choose Group into callout in the handle menu to put them in one callout; when the first is a paragraph, its text becomes the callout's.
- Toggle list (토글 목록): only the title line shows; expand it to see the blocks inside. Good for folding away long reference material.
- Table (표): in a cell, Enter starts a new line in that cell and Shift+Enter goes to the cell below; from the last row it adds a new row. Tab and Shift+Tab go to the next and previous cell. With text in a cell selected, Tab and Shift+Tab indent or outdent just the selected lines, as Indent lines in the cell (칸 안 들여쓰기) and Outdent lines in the cell (칸 안 내어쓰기) in the block menu (Ctrl/Cmd+/) do. The block menu's Indent (들여쓰기) indents the whole table. Drag across several cells to select them, then press Merge cells (셀 병합) in the toolbar to join them across columns or rows. Split cell (셀 분할) in the menu at the merged cell's top right undoes it. Colour (색깔) in the menu at a cell's top right sets that cell's text and background colour; in the handle menu left of a row or above a column it colours the whole row or column. Select cells by dragging and press Delete or Backspace to empty them. When the cells selected are whole rows or whole columns and all empty, those rows or columns are deleted, so a row or column with something in it goes with a second press. A cell's colour is not counted as content; a picture in a cell is. Delete row (행 삭제) and Delete column (열 삭제) in the handle menu left of a row or above a column delete all the selected rows or columns when that row or column is among them. Deleting all of a table's rows or all of its columns deletes the table and leaves an empty line in its place. Ctrl/Cmd+Z brings back what was deleted. Drag a column's right border (where a blue line shows) to change its width, and double-click it to fit the column to its cells' text on one line. A picture in a cell counts at its size, and a cell merged across columns is not measured. Fitted by a double-click, a column grows only into the room left beside the other columns, so the table stays within the page, and text longer than that still wraps. Ctrl/Cmd+Z takes a fitted width back too. Column widths are set with a mouse. When the columns add up to more than the page is wide, the table scrolls sideways: a column without a width of its own counts as 120 px, a dragged one as its width (at least 35 px). Fit to page width (페이지 폭에 맞추기) in the handle menu scales every column from the width it is drawn at, so the table is exactly as wide as the page; a narrow table fills it. No column goes under 35 px, so a table with very many columns can still be wider than the page. The widths are saved as fitted to the page on the screen of whoever pressed it, so on a narrower screen the table scrolls sideways and on a wider one it is narrower than the page. Ctrl/Cmd+Z takes it back; on a phone it is in the block menu that the bar's Turn into (전환) opens. A merged table stays merged when exported as HTML or Markdown. Header row (행 제목) and Header column (열 제목) in the handle menu make the first row or column a header, and Turn into database (데이터베이스로 전환) makes the table a new database under this page, shown where the table was: the first column names the entries, the other columns become text properties named by the header row if there is one, and the rows keep their order (this takes full access to the page).
- Columns (다단 레이아웃): puts blocks side by side. Insert two empty columns with /2-column layout (2열 레이아웃), or type / in a block with text and pick Turn into columns (열로 전환) to put that block in the first column with an empty second one. You can also drag a block beside another (see above). Above the layout, Add column (열 추가) adds a column, Equal widths (동일 너비) evens them out, and Remove column layout (열 해제) takes the layout apart with its blocks one under another. At the top of each column, press − or +, or drag ↔, to set its width in steps from 1 to 4; the bin button (Delete column (keep content), 열 삭제 (내용 유지)) moves its content into the next column and deletes it. On a narrow screen columns stack again. Published as a site or exported as HTML or PDF, they stay side by side; on a screen 700 px wide or less they stack, and in print and PDF they stay side by side.
- Image slideshow (이미지 슬라이드): holds several pictures in one block to page through sideways. Drop pictures onto the block or click it to add them, use Enlarge (크게 보기) to page through them large, and download the uploaded pictures together. Drag the bar under the block to change its height.
- Synced block (동기화 블록): shows one piece of content on several pages. Change the original and every copy changes. Choose Copy and sync (동기화 블록으로 복사) in the original block's handle menu, then Paste below in the block menu where it should go. Unsync (동기화 해제) in a synced block's handle menu leaves a copy of the original's content in its place, which no longer follows the original.
- Database view block (데이터베이스 보기 블록): places the table, board or chart of a database that lives on another page onto this one. The database stays one; this block has a view and filters of its own. Dashboard (대시보드) makes a row of two of these blocks side by side in one go. See Views.
- Button (버튼): runs actions such as adding an entry, editing properties or sending a notification or email, one after another, when pressed. See Automations and buttons.
- Code (코드): pick a language and the code is coloured to match. It sits on a dark background; Light background (밝은 배경으로) in the handle menu gives it a light one that suits the page (dark again in dark mode).
Putting pictures side by side
- To put two or three pictures side by side, place a picture in each column of a column layout. Drag a picture block beside another picture and the two become two columns at once.
- To page through many pictures in one place, use an image slideshow.
- A table's cells take pictures too, beside or under the cell's text, as a planning document keeps a screenshot and its notes in one cell. In a cell, type /이미지 (image), or press Add picture (그림 넣기) in the menu at the cell's top right; picture files pasted or dropped onto a cell go in as well, merged cells included. Drag the dot at a picture's bottom right corner to resize it; a picture is never wider than its cell. Press a picture and the caret goes beside it, so Backspace deletes it. A table with pictures copied from another page or a web page keeps its pictures in its cells when pasted. Exported as HTML or PDF, or published as a site, the pictures stay in their cells; exported as Markdown, a cell holds
. The copy the phone apps show without a connection does not show a cell's pictures yet. - To keep pictures in rows and cells with properties for each item, put them in a files property of a database table; see the table in Views.
Typing like Markdown
Type #, -, 1. or > at the start of a line and a space, and the line becomes a heading, list or quote block. Wrapping text in backticks (`) makes inline code. Content pasted from Notion or another editor arrives as the same blocks: headings, lists, tables and code. A Notion callout arrives as a callout, with its icon, its colour and the blocks inside it.
Saving
What you edit is saved automatically. The save status (저장 상태) at the top of the page shows whether it has gone through. Anything typed while the connection was down is not lost: it is kept in the browser and can be opened and downloaded from Saved input copies (보관된 입력 사본) in the sidebar.
Pictures you paste, and pictures you put into a table cell, show at once. While they upload, the save status says Uploading picture (그림 올리는 중). Until a picture is uploaded it is kept on this device (the browser or the app), for up to 30 days after its page was last opened, so closing or reloading the page meanwhile loses nothing: the upload goes on the next time the page opens. A page with pictures still waiting to upload is listed under Saved input copies (보관된 입력 사본) too. If a picture can't be kept on this device, the page says why at the top, and you can't leave the page until the picture is uploaded. A picture put in on another device and not uploaded yet shows here as "This picture isn't on this device", and stays until you remove it or add it again.
